There is a growing number of breweries in Austin, and that is always a good thing. Now, Austin is not turning into Ft. Collins by any mean, but any new brewer in Austin is a welcome addition. Especially if their beers are damn good.
I had not heard of Austin Beerworks before I visited the store on Friday. Their specialty is the can. Apparently it is eco-friendly, chill quickly and they are like a mini-keg, for your hand! So, I decided to try out their Fire Eagle American IPA. IPA's are pretty popular to can, and the results are pretty good.
Fire Eagle decent for a can of beer. Sadly, canned beers still carry the stigma of cheapness, even though this sixer was around 9 bucks. I am not sure if that will change any time soon, but the more breweries that offer canned craft beers will help. I suggest just drinking this beer out of the can, and skip the glass altogether. The nose is yeasty, and beery, and nothing to be missed. Fire Eagle is crisp and bitter, and pretty tasty, so long as you don't sully it up by putting it in a glass. While this beer is not phenomenal, it is one of the best canned IPA's I have ever had. It is hard not to qualify it, but compared to some of the best IPA's in bottles, Fire Eagle is just average. Austin Beerworks does have 3 other offerings, and I do believe I will try one more out. Canned beers: are they the future?
